Background: The Administration was asked to provide an update on the district's efforts regarding Wisconsin Act 31. American Indian Studies in Wisconsin, often referred to as Wisconsin Act 31, refers to the requirement that all public school districts and pre-service education programs provide instruction on the history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of Wisconsin's eleven federally recognized American Indian nations and tribal communities.

In alignment with Wisconsin Act 31, First Nations Studies, MPS has leveraged resources and has collaborated with numerous entities in the tribal communities and the university communities to meet the goals of the program and meet the Title VI requirements as set forth from the Office of Indian Education. First Nations Studies, MPS has 13 solid community partnerships that support the program's efforts.

The goals of the district’s First Nation’s Studies include providing instruction that gives students an appreciation and understanding of different value systems and cultures, as well as an understanding of human relations.

The Administration will provide an overview of its efforts as they align to Act 31 and Title VI at the Student Achievement and School Innovation Committee meeting.
